Aging wrestler Randy "The Ram" Robinson is long past his prime but still ready and rarin' to go on the pro-wrestling circuit. After a particularly brutal beating, however, Randy hangs up his tights, pursues a serious relationship with a long-in-the-tooth stripper, and tries to reconnect with his estranged daughter. But he can't resist the lure of the ring and readies himself for a comeback.
The story follows Randy 'The Ram' Robinson, a washed-up professional wrestler who continues to perform in the ring despite his failing health with the hope of reliving the glory of his prime days. However, when his condition worsens, he tries to find an alternate career outside the ring only to struggle with it and also attempts to mend his relationship with his estranged daughter.
This film feels real. I one hundred percent believe that Randy "The Ram" Robinson was a real wrestler and this is a documentary crew following him in his daily live. It all feels completely authentic.
An aging wrestler, grappling with mortality and a lifetime of bad decisions - played by Mickey Rourke, semi naked much of the time. A stripper with a heart of gold - played by Marisa Tomei, mostly naked most of the time. An abandoned and angry daughter - played by Evan Rachel Wood, consistently not even remotely naked. To sum up, there are varying degrees of nakedness in this movie, and Marisa's contribution, her willingness to go the extra mile, is very much appreciated.
The Wrestler is a generic but somewhat affecting sports flick about a washed-up wrestler who returns to the ring. What is most interesting about the film, though, are the parallels director Darren Aronofsky draws between wrestler Randy "The Ram" Robinson (Mickey Rourke) and Cassidy (Marisa Tomei), the aging stripper he is infatuated with.
An over the hill wrestler attempts to negotiate a comeback while maintaining one relationship and attempting to rekindle another with his estranged daughter. The film details all the physical and emotional turmoil the man goes through and at times it is really heartbreaking. Everyone lost their shit for the real life comeback of Mickey Rourke in this, a comeback so powerful it resulted in this, The Expendables, and Iron Man 2. This is definitely Rourke's best performance and The Wrestler is a pretty solid movie.
As a professional wrestler who partnered with such celebrated grapplers as Jackie Fargo and Tojo Yamamoto in Memphis, Jerry Jarrett learned all about the throws, reversals and other actions that could confound an opponent.
Eventually, while remaining based in Middle Tennessee, he started booking wrestlers for the territory that included Memphis and was controlled by promoters Nick Gulas, who was from Nashville, and Roy Welch, of Dyersburg.
Meanwhile, the blond and handsome Jarrett became a popular and successful wrestler himself, earning several tag team championship belts and delighting fans who mostly were unaware of his behind-the-scenes influence.
Brown said he, Russell, Jarrett and various wrestlers would meet an hour before the show's 11 a.m. airtime, to plan the specifics of the action. "And keep in mind, we were live, there was no tape delay at all. It was absolutely live, but all planned in advance."
Also among those who caught Jarrett's eye were Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who wrestled on the Memphis circuit before becoming a motion-picture superstar, and Johnson's father, wrestler Rocky "Soul Man" Johnson. "In the wild world of pro wrestling, the world that I love, we lost a legend this weekend," Dwayne Johnson said Thursday, in a video tribute to Jarrett posted on Instagram. "Thank you for taking care of my family."
Jarrett's business was the last territory left, and it lasted until the late '90s, before it all went national," James said. McMahon appreciated Jarrett's tenacity, and Jarrett worked several years as a WWE consultant, launching a new emphasis on smaller, agile wrestlers such as Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels over the former preference for behemoths, such as Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant. This opened up the field and made wrestling more exciting, James said, because it meant "anybody could become a champion."
All of these wrestlers listed below will be invited to attend the luncheon awards banquet that will take place at the Fareway Conference Center in Boone, Iowa on Wednesday, March 1 at noon. Dan Gable and Mark Ironside will be our special guests handing out awards. Media is encouraged to attend.
No fundraisers have been set up for the pair, but Dallas Lowry said he expects their medical bills to be fairly steep. For now, he is asking the public to keep the two wrestlers in their thoughts and prayers.
The art of life resembles more that of the wrestler, than the dancer; since the wrestler must ever be ready on his guard, and stand firm against the sudden unforeseen events of his adversary." Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, "Meditations"
As a child, Shaver (shown here warming up before a tournament this year) read the book "No Excuses" by Kyle Maynard, a congenital amputee who was born with a similar condition. Maynard became a very successful high school wrestler in Georgia and has gone on to a career as a motivational speaker, author and most recently was in national headlines as the first person to crawl on his own to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. "I've kinda modeled myself after him," Shaver said. "He's the type of man I want to be like."
Shaver competed at Massillon under the same rules as every other Ohio high school wrestler, with one exception. His coaches wrote a letter to Ohio's state athletic association and asked for an exemption allowing Shaver to always start from the neutral position, seen here.
Shaver and his best friend, Darese Sparkman, a wrestler at nearby Perry High School, head home after church to play video games and hang out. "He's the kind of friend I would do anything for," Shaver said.
At the district tournament this year, Shaver would face some of the best wrestlers in one of the nation's best states. He battled to the consolation quarterfinals before losing his second match of the double-elimination tournament, ending his season and his high school career.
