Try Before You Buy Makeup

What it does: Only to be used during the day time. Apply after moisturizer and before Airbrush Foundation. Using only a few drops, apply with your fingertips to areas of the face you want to soften lines and blur out imperfections.

Why you'll love it: This "Make Me Younger" Serum instantly mattifies the skin and hydrates to leave skin looking smoother. This featherweight primer delivers dramatically noticeable results that are noticeable with or without makeup.

AR is also proving to be useful in the physical retail environment, as a more sanitary option for trying out makeup. Retailer Sephora is among the early adopters, both with its mobile app as well as its in-store standalone mirror that allows users to see how various products look on their faces.

Meet the godmother of virtual makeup. Chang, 60, is the creator of virtual try-on technology that has been adopted by beauty giants like Estee Lauder, Shiseido, Chanel and Revlon. Shoppers, who used to have to guess what shade of lipstick, foundation or eyeshadow would look good on them, can increasingly test options online and in stores before purchasing.

Seconds later, it spit out a recommendation for my perfect shade (bone) and two accompanying lipsticks (blush and red hot). I examined the before-and-after images of myself on my screen, and without much more thought, added both products to the cart. The promise of free samples with my purchase, plus free shipping, sealed the deal.

As much of the country continues reopening after the COVID-19 shutdown, many stores are having to reimagine their old way of doing things. Sephora and Ulta were faced with that challenge when it came to their free product testers. When visiting either makeup and beauty store, customers were able to sample all the products, including eye shadows, foundations and lipsticks, before purchasing them. When guests visit from now on, however, that will no longer be an option due to health and safety concerns.

Since allowing guests to sample their products is such a big part of both Sephora and Ulta's in-store experience, they'e figured out a way for customers to do it safely. Both chain retailers will be taking their product sampling digital. Here's everything you need to know before heading to either store.

The year may have started like any other, but a global health crisis compelled beauty stores to lower their shutters in March. With in-store product swatching put on ice following hygiene concerns, its virtual counterpart has now assumed its place under the mainstream spotlight. While online makeup try-on tools have been pedalling through the beauty-verse for a while now, the cutting-edge facial mapping technology of today serves as a far cry from the artificial, super-imposed experiences you tried for laughs at sleepovers.

In light of the pandemic, the American e-tailer has been positioning its interactive virtual experience as an alternative to in-store product swatching. Spanning a wide range of products, from eye and lip makeup to lesser-known candidates, such as false eyelashes, GLAMlab serves as an easy way to dabble with colours to find your perfect match.

In June, it unveiled its own Facetime-style proposition that essentially brings the experience of visiting a makeup counter to consumers' phones and iPads, letting them try on lipstick, eyeshadows and more before they buy.

It works by giving customers the chance to connect with beauty professionals via a face-to-face call that is made within the NYX app. These makeup artists then offer advice and styling tips via the one-on-one service.

The most technologically advanced way to try on makeup is by using augmented reality through a digital makeup app. According to the Poshly survey (see sidebar), 78% of respondents said they are more inclined to purchase makeup from a brand online if they can virtually see what it looks like on their face before purchasing. This is huge for pure-play online brands that struggle to reach their audience.

Behind every beauty brand or Fashion Week show is a genius makeup artist that creates new looks season after season. Having the ability to virtually try-on innovative artist-inspired looks with a simple tap on a smartphone helps consumers feel included and special, and gives them the chance to create the looks at-home that are straight off of the runways.

Augmented reality has become an asset for many makeup companies and apps. By way of this technology, curious people can try a whole gamut of lipsticks, eyeshadows, blushes, contouring techniques, hair dyes, and more without ever physically executing the task (and enduring any mishaps).

Pinterest has joined the virtual makeup game. From now on, you can try lipsticks by Urban Decay, Sephora, NYX, and other brands through the website's Try On feature. The new tool is brought to you by Lens.

Pinterest's Try On feature is similar to features introduced by the likes of YouTube, Amazon, L'Oreal, Benefit, Neutrogena, and others. It won't radically change the makeup industry or shoot Pinterest up the ranks but it will definitely win the hearts of thousands of Pinners who'll appreciate more versatility for their boards.

Try before you buy lets customers see and try products before making a purchase. Similar to how shoppers try on or test merchandise in-store, this order fulfillment option usually involves delivering products to the customer so they can try before buying, or scheduling an in-store appointment to do the same.

For fine jewelry brand Gemist, try before you buy helped differentiate its brand by letting consumers try on fashion replicas of their ring designs, resulting in a fine jewelry purchase (often an engagement purchase) of that design.

Not only does try before you buy help attract new customers, it gives your existing customer base more flexibility and convenience to try new products, something 57% of consumers say influences their decision to buy online, according to a commissioned Forrester Consulting study conducted on behalf of Shopify.

It may sound counterintuitive, but letting shoppers try products before they buy can help reduce your order return rates. Why? If customers get to touch and try products before they actually pay, the likelihood of returns due to fit issues or the item being different than what they expected will decrease.

BlackCart founder Donny Ouyang had previously founded online tutoring marketplace Rayku before joining a seed-stage VC fund, Caravan Ventures. But he was inspired to return to entrepreneurship, he says, after experiencing a personal problem with trying to order shoes online.

The startup now provides a try-before-you-buy platform that integrates with online storefronts, including those from Shopify, Magento, WooCommerce, Big Commerce, SalesForce Commerce Cloud, WordPress and even custom storefronts. The system is designed to be turnkey for online retailers and takes around 48 hours to set up on Shopify and around a week on Magento, for example.

After the customer receives the item, they are able to keep it for a period of time (as designated by the retailer) before being charged. BlackCart covers any fraud as part of its value proposition to retailers.
